At the beginning of April, five students from Exeter University visited our school. They attended a number of classes – maths, science, RS, physics, MFL and English – and shadowed different teachers from various departments to gain secondary school experience. They had a very positive experience with our staff and students for the 3 days they were with us and said they were inspired by our classroom pedagogy and the behaviour ethos of our school. On Saturday and Sunday the 16th and 17th of March, our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver students, along with two sixth form volunteers, braved the wind and rain of rural Buckinghamshire to hone their camp craft skills. The group took part in a walk to the campground, setting up tents, building shelters in the bush, making fires, roasting marshmallows, cooking over camp stove, rock climbing and much more! (more…)
On Friday 15th March, twelve students competed at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championship at the Copper Box Arena. It was a big event with hundreds of students – some novice and some very experienced – competing from Y7-13. Our team came with personal targets – a set number of metres they wanted to row for their year level time limit – and every student surpassed their target! (more…)
Our art and textiles teacher Andria Zafirakou collected an MBE from The Duke of Cambridge last week for her services to Education and Young People. Andria is our Associate Deputy Headteacher and is also the recipient of the Global Teacher Prize 2018. (more…)
On Wednesday and Thursday this week, our Year 8 students developed their debating skills in a series of workshops led by experts in the field of Debating from the English-Speaking Union. (more…)
Our Year 11 and Year 12 Most Able students attended two informative and inspirational presentations, delivered by students from Jesus College, University of Cambridge. They learned about life at university, prospects for future employment and the advantages of studying for a degree at Cambridge University. (more…)
Last week (4th – 8th March) was National Careers Week and here at Alperton Community School we ran a number of events and activities in order to support this event. On Monday during form time, students explored the importance of Labour Market Information when making decisions about career choices. Comparing careers against one another and against the national average enabled students to easily see if a certain vocation is in growth or decline. (more…)
Two teams of Year 8 and Year 9 students represented Alperton in the Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition on Saturday 9 March. It was the students’ first experience of the legal system and they found it very enjoyable and engaging. They were well prepared for their competition as the Liaison Magistrate, Tim Harris, had organised a visit to Willesden Magistrates’ Court for them in advance of the competition and they learnt a lot by observing other trials. Additionally, the English and Drama teachers, Ms Sidharh, Ms Jaffrey and Ms Wallace offered their support with the presentation. (more…)
On Monday we had the wonderful opportunity to invite to our school our prospective new year 7 cohort to meet with our staff and take advantage of their guidance and assistance with the application process. Last week we hosted three successful Most Able Fairs. A large number of staff, multi agencies and sixth form students collaborated to make the KS3 and KS4 Most Able Fairs a very productive experience for our Most Able students and their parents. (more…)
