On Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May, 20 students from Year 9 and Year 10 took part in their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award practice expeditions.

From the very beginning, students arrived at the start point with smiles on their faces, bags on their backs, boots on their feet, and a positive attitude towards the challenge ahead.

The students were brilliantly supported throughout the weekend by the dedicated staff team who volunteered their time: Ms Sandhu, Ms Alam, Mr Bardewa, Mr Salha, Miss Ernestine, Ms Bowerman, Mr Rayleigh and Mr Laborie. Their encouragement, expertise and good humour ensured the expedition was both safe and enjoyable for all involved.

Before setting off, each group received training on safely crossing roads, understanding the Countryside Code, and using essential safety equipment including trackers, high-visibility vests and first aid kits. The groups then began navigating their routes enthusiastically, even when a few wrong turns appeared along the way!

Despite occasional navigational challenges, the students showed resilience, teamwork and excellent problem-solving skills as they made their way through the beautiful countryside in glorious sunshine towards the campsite.

Upon arrival at camp, a small amount of drizzle didn’t dampen spirits as students learned how to pitch their tents correctly. Students then took part in campcraft sessions, learning how to safely use trangias and cook the meals they had carefully planned and prepared. Supported by Ms Bowerman, Mr Rayleigh and Mr Laborie, all groups cooked successfully within their safety circles, ensuring water and ingredients were correctly positioned around their cooking areas.

The day concluded with a lovely group reflection, congratulations for everyone’s achievements, and a pot of hot chocolate before students settled into their tents.

Sunday morning involved students cooking breakfast, preparing lunch and receiving further training on correctly packing away tents. Every group completed this expertly before setting off once again in staggered intervals, fully equipped with trackers, medical kits and phones.

Throughout the second day, students continued to demonstrate resilience and teamwork, learning from wrong turns while keeping the morale high. At the finish point, students were warmly welcomed by proud carers.

Well done to all students, and best of luck to everyone on their qualifying expedition on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June.
