We were thrilled to welcome Peter Hoare, Chemistry Outreach Officer from Newcastle University, to deliver a Spectroscopy in a Suitcase (SIAS) workshop for our Year 13 chemistry students. Developed by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), this hands-on programme gave students the rare opportunity to work with a real IR spectrometer, analyse NMR spectra, and explore how spectroscopic techniques are applied across medicine, forensics, and materials science.

Working collaboratively, students interpreted real data to identify unknown compounds — a challenge that proved both stimulating and inspiring.

“Working with real spectroscopic data and equipment was amazing — it helped everything make sense.” — Year 13 Chemistry Students

“The hands-on learning and clear explanations had a significant impact on our students’ understanding of this complex topic.” — Ms Saini

The workshop not only supported our A-level curriculum but also ignited a genuine enthusiasm for chemistry-related degrees and careers. Our sincere thanks go to Peter Hoare and Newcastle University for their commitment to science education.
