Students celebrated World Environment Day on Thursday 5 June with the opportunity to participate in two workshops within the science and textiles departments. Both workshops offered students the opportunity to learn more about our environment.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day was Beat Plastic Pollution, highlighting the growing issue which extends beyond discarded single-use plastics to include microplastics in our food, water, and even our bodies, and to encourage governments, organisations,  industries, and individuals to take action against the pollution.

In the science lab, Mr Mohamed taught students about the urgent issue of plastic pollution through a series of interactive, hands-on stations. They learned how difficult it is to remove microplastics from water using tweezers and sieves, explored how recycling plants use density to sort different types of plastic, and tested their knowledge of recycling symbols by sorting packaging correctly. Students also reflected on their personal plastic use by completing a short survey. They ended the session by writing personal eco-pledges and adding them to the Wall of Change, showing their commitment to helping end plastic pollution.

Students who participated in the textiles workshop with Ms Greaves learned how to make charms from recycling milk cartons and juice bottle lids incorporating different pattern designs.
