All students have a right to be stretched and challenged. This includes those who are particularly able in certain subjects or have a wider potential for outstanding educational achievement. Students with exceptional ability may require additional provision, both in lessons and beyond, to achieve success in line with their potential.
We recognise that strategies used for raising standards for the more able students will help raise standards for all.
At Alperton Community School, we recognise that more able pupils could be tomorrow’s social, intellectual, economic, business and cultural leaders. Our school aims to provide the best possible education to meet the individual needs of all students and to help them develop to their full potential. We understand that more able education is an equal opportunities issue.
Differentiated work and opportunities for work which will stretch and challenge all of our students should be clearly signposted in schemes of learning and TLLs will work with their teams to ensure that this is the case at all key stages.
Setting may help to differentiate, but even within a set, there will be considerable difference in ability and performance. It is crucial that MA students are set challenging homework which meets their needs.
MA students are identified from primary school records, KS2 levels, through Cognitive Ability Tests taken in Year 7 and by nomination by each teacher during ARD data collection using agreed Faculty criteria. Please note that all students who have achieved a L5 in English or Maths at KS2 and who achieve a CATs score of 115+ will automatically be flagged as MA for your consideration and to aid your planning.
New initiatives to challenge and support MA students are always welcome, as are initiatives to challenge and reward students across the ability range.
Please refer to the More Able policy for further details.
Please speak to Indira Warwick if you would like to discuss any ideas you may have relating to MA education or if you would like any support with provision and differentiation for MA students in your lessons.
