What's Happening at ACS!

Well, the examinations are finally over and so we come to the closing stages of another summer term. Not that you'd notice any easing off from the business of learning from the purposeful way in which the school has switched from the old to the new academic year! On 5th July, we effectively began the 2010-2011 school year with our current Year 9s beginning their KS4 courses at Stanley Avenue - a real rite of passage! In this way, we hope ro provide just the right kind of launch-pad by which to maximise the KS4 experience and to iron-out those minor glitches which inevitably arise given the sheer complexity of a new timetable. To resolve these issues before September ensures the best possible start to the new school year and therefore the best possible start for all our students.
Memorial Day
Wednesday 21st July 2010 will be a day full of emotion for students and staff here at Alperton Community School as we pay tribute to, and remember, those who are no longer with us.
A special assembly, starting at 3pm, will be held with her year group, in memory of Farhiya Mohamed who passed away earlier this year.
We shall also be holding a memorial and celebration of life service from 4pm, in which we will be remembering two members of our staff who passed away this year; Asad Shah and Jon Oldham.
Both events are being held in the hall at the upper site in Stanley Avenue. All staff are invited and the lower school site will be closed from 3.45pm.
A number of students will be representing the whole school and it is hoped that our tributes will bring comfort and support to the families as we share their loss, but also celebrate the lives of those who are gone.
May they rest in peace.
Home Access - Last Call

We are delighted to announce that we now have 55 families who have successfully applied for and received the Home Access Grant - but time is running out! The success of the scheme means that there are now only 20,000 grants left to award and the administrators of the scheme are strongly encouraging any families with an application form at home to complete it and send it back immediately.
Due to the success of the programme, applications are now being invited for computers for children with severe disabilities or Special Educational Needs.
If your child has difficulty using a computer because of a severe disability or a special educational need, they may be eligible for a tailor-made Home Access package based on a simple evaluation of their needs. If you think you might be eligible, just click on the link (Are you eligible?) below - but hurry! Are you eligible? - the scheme will not be around for much longer!
2009/2010 Arts Retrospective

It seems a long time ago now but back in the dark chilly winter of 2009, we presented our annual Winter Concert. Among the highlights of that event are the following two performances - one traditional and one very modern. Click on the link to re-live the dhol players and the Triple As who performed a very inspiring message for all our students. http://youtu.be/cCQw2a3CQh8 ; http://youtu.be/bmZbqlaBb3s.
Alperton Community School Students Sweep the board

Nineteen students from Alperton Community School took part in two major National cheerleading competitions at the weekend, and won them both becoming National Champions.
The first event took place in Nottingham, and was a contest of 60 cheerleading clubs across the UK. The Alperton Students won their way through to the finals and taking first place at Junior Level 1. The following day the students were in South London battling against other school cheerleading clubs for the prestigious National School Award, which they again won becoming National School Champions at Junior Level 1. They were also awarded the 5* ribbon for the most innovative Choreography.
The photograph shows the team undertaking one of the routines that helped them become National Champions.
The Greening of Alperton!

ACS Year 9 student, Jothikka Amaralingham gained first prize in a competition organised by the City Challenge London Student Award, by coming up with some really innovative ideas in her project on how the school could be made more environmentally friendly. The result was an invitation to Imperial College to receive a prize presented by BBC News Reader, Mike Ramsden, and one of Allan Sugar’s ‘Apprentice’ competitors , Noorul Choudhury (see picture). As part of her prize, she also won a week of work experience at the Kindred Communications agency. Alperton’s green shoots of today may well become the environmental saviours of tomorrow!
